The book of Job

The Book of Job

What is the book of Job about?

Job lived in the land of Uz and was the most blameless and upright man in all the land.  He feared God and shunned evil like no other.  One day, Satan presented himself before the Lord and it is the Lord who actually brought up the conversation to Satan that Job would never curse God, even under extreme circumstances.

With the Lord’s approval, Satan goes out and pretty much brings mayhem to Job’s life.  Satan takes away his massive flock, gets his servants killed, and kills his seven sons and three daughters.  All of this happens in one fell swoop, as Job gets word of each disaster all at the same time.  Even still, Job praises the Lord and refuses to curse him.

With the Lord’s approval, Satan makes a second attempt to get Job to curse God by attacking his health.  Job gets afflicted with sores from head to toe, nightmares, scabs that peeled and became black and ugly in appearance, bad breath, fever, and pain.  Job’s wife wants him to curse God in hopes that he would be struck for his sin and his life ended.  He refused.  Job’s friends even rationalize that he is suffering because of potential secret sins he has.

In the end, the Lord is pleased with Job and doubled the flock he previously had and blessed him with another seven sons and three daughters.  Nowhere in all the land were women as beautiful as Job’s daughters.  Maybe the Lord allowed this to happen to him because suffering is an opportunity to bring us closer to Him.
